TIPA is a volunteer-driven organization built by pilots and aviation enthusiasts who care about the future of general aviation at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. As we continue growing the association, we’re looking for a few community-minded people to help lead key initiatives around events, communications, and member engagement.

Manager, Communications & Member Engagement

WHY THIS ROLE IS IMPORTANT

Clear, consistent communication helps pilots and other members stay informed about events, advocacy efforts, airport developments, and opportunities to participate in the GA community. This role ensures TIPA remains a trusted source of information and a strong communication bridge between pilots, partners, and the broader aviation ecosystem. 

ABOUT YOU

You are a strong communicator who enjoys turning complex information into clear, useful updates. You understand how to foster and maintain a consistent voice across multiple channels and how to keep a community informed without overwhelming them. You care about building trust through thoughtful, transparent communication and collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build, mentor, and coordinate a small team of communications volunteers (e.g., social media, content, design)
  • Identify opportunities to expand communications capacity through volunteers, partnerships, or new channels
  • Lead monthly member communications, including newsletters, announcements, and regular updates
  • Translate advocacy work, airport developments, partnerships, and events into clear and trusted member communications
  • Maintain a consistent voice and messaging across TIPA communication channels, including social media
  • Support member engagement through surveys, feedback, and outreach.
  • Surface member insights and perspectives to help inform TIPA programming and priorities
  • Collaborate with other TIPA teams—especially Digital and Events—to promote upcoming programming

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate, or mentor volunteers or small teams in a collaborative environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to clarity and tone
  • Ability to organize projects, manage priorities, and meet deadlines 
  • Experience managing newsletters, member communications, or community updates
  • Familiarity with social media and digital communication channels
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear and engaging content
  • Organized and comfortable managing a regular communication cadence 
  • Interest in aviation or the general aviation community is a strong asset

COMMITMENT & STRUCTURE

  • This is a volunteer leadership role within the Toronto Island Pilots Association
  • This position is unpaid and intended for individuals who want to contribute to the growth of the GA community at YTZ
  • The role operates as a committee leadership position reporting to the TIPA Board
  • Expected time commitment ranges from approximately 3–5 hours per month, with additional time leading up to key deliverables and/or events
  • Reasonable expenses related to TIPA activities may be reimbursed where appropriate

Pilots consistently tell us that one of the most valuable things TIPA can provide is opportunities to connect with other pilots and participate in meaningful aviation events. Events are where relationships are built, ideas are exchanged, and the GA community at the Island becomes stronger. This role ensures TIPA continues to host well-organized, welcoming events that bring pilots together and help build a thriving aviation culture at YTZ.  

ABOUT YOU

You enjoy bringing people together and making things happen. You’re organized, proactive, and comfortable coordinating logistics while keeping the bigger goal in mind: building a stronger aviation community. You’re the kind of person who sees an empty hangar and imagines the BBQ, coffee meetup, or safety seminar that could happen there and can organize and motivate people to make it happen!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead in planning, organizing, and executing 4+ TIPA member events annually
  • Coordinate co-hosted events with aviation partners, including FBOs, flight schools, and industry organizations
  • Oversee/manage event logistics including venues, catering, equipment, and scheduling
  • Manage event budgets and ensure cost-effective planning
  • Recruit volunteers and coordinate event staffing
  • Support registration, check-in, and basic data capture for events
  • Gather feedback from attendees and evaluate event success to improve future programming

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Experience planning events, meetups, or community programming
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate, or mentor volunteers or small teams in a collaborative environment (e.g. TIPA volunteers and working with external partners)
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills to effectively manage priorities to meet deadlines
  • Ability to attend and support in-person events at or near Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport
  • Interest in aviation or the general aviation community is a strong asset

Overview: TIPA is a volunteer-driven organization, and many of our initiatives are made possible by members who are willing to lend a hand from time to time. The Volunteer at Large role is ideal for members who want to stay involved with TIPA and occasionally support events, community initiatives, or special projects as opportunities arise.
